(SPEECH) INTERVIEWER: Thank you for participating in the RAIVEN study. This video will walk you through the steps for collecting your nasal swab. (DESCRIPTION) RAIVEN, Randomized Assessment of Influenza Vaccine Efficacy Network (SPEECH) Before starting, blow your nose, and then wash or sanitize your hands. Make sure to dry your hands thoroughly. Lay out the pieces of the nasal swab kit in front of you, on a clean, dry surface. (DESCRIPTION) Swab kit. (SPEECH) Remove the cap from the collection tube and place the tube in an empty cup to keep it upright. Remove the swab from the wrapper. Be careful not to touch the tip or place the swab on any surface to avoid contamination. Insert the entire soft end of the swab straight back into your nostril less than one inch or until you feel gentle resistance. The swab does not need to be inserted far, just until the swab is not visible. Slowly rotate the swab, gently rubbing it along the insides of your nasal passage several times. (DESCRIPTION) Remove swab. (SPEECH) Then insert the same swab into your other nostril and follow the same steps. Place the swab into the collection tube with a swab tip facing downward. Your nasal swab should be in the liquid in the tube. Bend the handle at the break point until it snaps. Discard the swab handle. Screw the cap onto the collection tube tight and straight. Place the sample collection tube into the biohazard specimen bag with the absorbent sheet that is already inside. Seal the bag. (DESCRIPTION) A person washes hands. (SPEECH) Wash and dry your hands again thoroughly. Use a pen to answer the two questions on the front of the biohazard bag. Do not put any personally-identifying information, like your name or address, on the bag. Thank you for taking the time to be a part of this study.
